More than twenty independent local makers share one grand room in Crookwell's old bank building on Goulburn Street. The coffee and the cake cabinet are at the front, the nursery is out the back, and there is a lot in between. Open seven days.

A Cafe & Retail Collective
Twenty-odd small businesses, one very big room
Ensemble & Co is not one shop. It is more than twenty independent local makers and retailers sharing a single grand room, each with their own bay framed in antique white, along a centred timber aisle that runs the length of the building.
Walk in past the coffee machine and the cake cabinet and you can browse clothing, jewellery, homewares, furniture, art, gifts and local seasonal produce without leaving the one address. Keep going and the aisle opens into the nursery at the rear, with plants out in the courtyard.
It is run by Brett and Gen Allen, and the whole point of it is that everything in here belongs to somebody local.

The ferns are not a decoration anyone forgets. They hang the length of the room, over the tables and the shopfronts alike.
Ensemble Cafe
Coffee at the old bank counter
Breakfast and lunch are served at the front of the room, along the original timber counter the building has had since it was rebuilt. There is a cake cabinet, a glass cloche or two, and a blackboard menu that changes.
Grazing boards, house-baked treats, jams and honey in jars, gluten-free biscuits and a lot of coffee. If you are passing through on the Goulburn to Crookwell to Laggan to Taralga run, it is a good place to stop.

Goulburn Street since 1919
A draper's, then a fire, then a bank
- 1919
The first building on the site opens, selling drapery, hardware and agricultural supplies to the district.
- 1938
On 21 October it burns to the ground.
- After the fire
A grand Art Deco building rises in its place, with an arched window and a marble entrance. The magnificent wooden counters are made at the same time, and they are still in use today.
- The tenants
Lancelot Harold Denning of Crookwell takes the first lease and offers furnishings. Later it is occupied by stock and station agents Pitt, Son and Badgery, and eventually it becomes a rural bank.
- Still here
The purpose-built strong room is still out the back. Overhead, the high vaulted timber ceiling and its wooden beams run the whole length of the room.

The Crookwell Nursery
Plants at the back, produce at the front
The nursery sits at the rear of the building, with plants sold out in the courtyard and displayed the whole way through the room. Potted herbs in kraft bags, seed packets, and greenery on every surface that will take it.
Along the counter there are house-made jams and honey, gluten-free peanut butter choc biscuits, cheese and grazing boards, and local seasonal produce. Plenty of it leaves in a takeaway bag.
